Workshop on Community engagement strategies for extreme weather events at the International Conference on Building Resilience

 

Dr. Bingunath Ingirige and Gayan Wedawatta from the DEFENCES research team conducted a workshop on community engagement strategies for extreme weather events at the International Conference on Building Resilience held in Kandala, Sri Lanka from 19th - 21st July 2011. 

The workshop was conducted on 20th July and was attended by conference delegates including academics, practitioners, and local policy makers. On going work of the DEFENCES research project was briefed to the workshop participants, and how the project seeks to engage with the flood affected small businesses was discussed with the active involvement of workshop attendants. Views of the workshop attendants were gathered and will help shape the research work being conducted.     

International Conference on Building Resilience was held as the Annual Conference of the International Institute for Infrastructure Renewal and Reconstruction (IIIRR) and sought to act as a platform for discussions on interdisciplinary approaches to disaster risk reduction, and the development of sustainable communities and cities. The conference was attended by over 100 international and local academics, practitioners, professionals and policy makers. 

 

 

Council shares flood recovery experience with university

The remarkable efforts to help Cockermouth recover from the floods of 2009 will be profiled in a nationwide study of how businesses can cope with similar emergencies in the future.

Allerdale Borough Council is assisting a team of academics led by the University of Salford with detailed research on the town centre’s flood recovery process.
